In June 2012, CageworX first opened its doors on the east side of Port Angeles under different ownership. At that time the program primarily only offered wrestling and boxing then further expanded its training to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai and MMA with the addition of Cody Houston to the gym’s staff. Professor Houston quickly became the manager and head instructor.
In 2014, the former owner decided to move on from the business and generously donated the mats and equipment to the new owner, Cody Houston. Once a new location was found at 508 W. 8th street the gym family contributed hours and hours of their valuable time and energy to turn the empty box of a space into the facility it is today.
May of 2018 We re-branded and renamed CageworX to 5th Element Brazilian Jiu Jitsu/Kickboxing & Fitness in order to appeal to a larger demographic and to better represent the family of martial artists that make up our community.
Since re-opening on 8th Street, the gym has continued to grow. The youth/teen Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Kickboxing programs expanded and we’ve hosted several seminars with renown instructors including BJJ legend Marcelo Alonso. In 2016 we also grew our fitness and striking classes with the help of Coach Phil Beatty. In July of 2016 Cody and his wife Jenny purchased the building and adjoining buildings. After months of remodeling and work, on October 3, 2016, Poser Yoga (Jenny’s studio) was moved from its former downtown Port Angeles location to the space adjoining the 5th Element gym.
August 2018 Cody and Jenny decided to take a chance and another step forward to better serve the community by opening a second location for both 5th Element and Poser Yoga in Sequim, WA. Located in the old Sequim gym location at 145 E Washington right downtown Sequim. The Sequim location is currently running with a slightly more limited schedule but is growing steadily.
