Head Instructor Professor Cody Houston has been an avid student of the martial arts for over 20 years. Prior to his introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA he spent years studying Kajukenbo, Kung Fu, Karate and Boxing with a variety of different dojos and instructors. Then after years of searching for something more he was able to find a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/MMA coach and team in Bend, OR. The date was Feb. 14th, 2000 and since then he has never looked back.
He spent 2.5 years training under Professor JT Taylor (Marcelo Alonso BJJ) and the Desert Dog Fight Team and it was also during this period that he was first introduced to Professor Marcelo Alonso (Carslon Gracie BJJ). Eventually he moved to Portland, OR to finish his college education and began his training period with Professor Matt Thornton and Straight Blast Gym International. He received his Blue and Purple belts in BJJ from Matt Thornton and also received an Associates Degree in Business Administration and Bachelors Degree in Marketing from Portland State University.
After three years of training and teaching in Portland, OR he moved to Bellingham, WA where he discovered that there was no place that taught BJJ or MMA at the time. He decided to take the plunge and opened his first gym (West Coast Fight Club). This was when he truly discovered his purpose in life and his passion for coaching athletes. While running the WCFC team in Bellingham he decided to re-new his affiliation and relationship with Professor Marcelo Alonso. Under Professor Alonso he received his Brown Belt and on April 9, 2011 he was awarded his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt.
During his time in Bellingham Houston also was the co-founder of Fight Night Entertainment (Pro/Am MMA Promotion) and spent years as a matchmaker. West Coast Fight Club eventually became Houston’s United Combat Sports (HUCS) which he ran out of a different facility.
In April of 2012 Coach Houston decided it was time for a change of scenery and not quite sure where he would start his next program he came to beautiful Port Angeles to visit family for a couple weeks. While in PA he met Dave Holden and visited the brand new CageworX Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA facility. A month later Holden offered Houston the Head Coach/Manager position at CwX, and in 2015 Houston took over ownership. At this time he moved the facility to its current location at 502 W 8th St which offered a much better opportunity for growth. In 2016, Cody and Jenny Houston purchased they building and in 2018 re-branding took place, changing the name of the program from CwX to it current name 5th Element BJJ/MMA. Houston is currently a licensed MMA judge in the state of Washington and received his Kru Yai certification from Ajahn Suchart in December 2016. His next goals are to achieve a Black Belt in Judo, continue competing in BJJ and Submission Grappling competitions and build 5th Element into a thriving community of raving fans!

Instructor Jake Blaski
Jake Blaski is one of the most active Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts competitors in the NW. His love for Jiu-Jitsu fuels his desire to compete, sometimes as much as 3 times a month all over the US in Gi and No Gi, and that passion comes across when he is teaching his Thursday No Gi classes. He has competed in over 20 amateur Mixed Martial Arts competitions and is now a professional MMA athlete. Before BJJ and MMA, Jake was serious semi-pro hockey player and played all over the world. After hockey he got into strong man training for the challenge, that lead him into his first few amateur MMA bouts with little to no martial arts training.
He soon realized that raw strength and power was not enough to succeed inside the cage and soon dove head first into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu where he began learning from BJJ and Fitness coaching legend Steve Maxwell. After he learned some BJJ fundamentals he earned his fight moniker, “the limb reaper,” thanks to his effective use of the arm bar. Coach Jake is truly a 5th Element/CageworX OG as he has been with the program and Professor Houston since it began back in 2012. Jake is currently a 4 stripe Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Purple Belt and teaches No Gi classes on Thursdays at our Port Angeles location.
