Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art, self-defense system and sport that focuses on grappling and primarily ground fighting. The art was brought to Brazil by Mitsuyo Maeda (1878-1941), a student of Kodokan Judo with a history of challenging and interacting with other combat arts. There it was developed and cultivated by the Gracie family until it was brought to the US and North America in the early 1990’s and showcased in the first Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique – most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person.
BJJ training can be used for self-defense or sport grappling tournaments and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. The choice is yours! Competition is absolutely NOT required at 5th Element. Although if you wish to do so, we will prepare you for success.
Training and competition is done in both the traditional uniform (called a “Gi” or Kimono) as well as “No Gi” (wearing collar-less clothing such as T shirts and shorts).
Randori, which is commonly referred to as “rolling”, and live drilling play a major role in training. This regular “live” training is an attribute that sets BJJ apart from other more traditional martial arts. A premium is placed on skill development and effectiveness as opposed to memorization and testing. Likewise, the understanding of grappling concepts and conceptual knowledge plays a key role in the students development.
At our Olympic Peninsula academies, rather than testing based on forms and a rote set of techniques, students are essentially “testing” every day based on the instructor’s evaluation of their honest effort and progress. Students have an opportunity to ask questions, learn fundamental concepts and drill a wide range of techniques and further develop themselves through live rolling with a diverse group of training partners. There is no stereotypical Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu student. It is very much an art form that allows the student to adapt what their learning and apply it based on their own personalities and unique physical abilities.

“ Jiu-jitsu puts you completely in the moment, where you must have a complete focus on finding a solution to the problem. This trains the mind to build that focus, to increase your awareness, your capacity to solve problems. ”
